Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a nonsurgical procedure used to examine a person's digestive tract. Using an endoscope, a flexible tube with a light and camera attached to it, your doctor can view pictures of your digestive tract on a color TV monitor.

It has two types:

  • Upper GI endoscopy - In this procedure upper part of your digestive tract is examined from inside like oral cavity, esophagus ( food pipe), stomach and duodenum.
  • Lower GI endoscopy or Colonoscopy - In this procedure your lower GI tract is examined like anus , rectum(stool reservoir) and large intestine or colon. If required , intervention can be done in the same setting.
